National Caregivers Month
November 1, 2012 § Leave a comment
There are only four kinds of people in the world – those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers” – Rosalyn Carter
As we head into November, it is time to once again celebrate National Family Caregivers Month. The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) began promoting the celebration in 1994 and in 1997 President Clinton signed the first annual proclamation which has since been signed by all succeeding presidents.
“This month and throughout the year, let the quiet perseverance of our family caregivers remind us of the decency and kindness to which we can all aspire.” – President Barack Obama, 2011’s NFC Proclamation
It is estimated that there are 65 million family caregivers in this country which fill vital roles for loved ones with a chronic illness or disability or the frailties of old age. Caregiving can be very stressful and demanding. In the case of a healthy spouse or a child living with the disabled person at home, caregiving can be a 24 hour, 7 day a week commitment. But even for the caregiver not living in the home, looking after a loved one or friend can consume all of the caregiver’s free time.
It is for this reason that the NFCA coordinates the month long efforts to raise awareness of issues, educate caregivers on resources, celebrate caregiver efforts and increase support for family caregivers. If you are a family caregiver searching for resources, looking for support or need answers to caregiving questions, the NFCA has an informative website to help you on your caregiving journey. www.nfcacares.org
This November please take note of those around you, in your families and community, who are family caregivers. A message of acknowledgement for their service, a gift of thanks or even an offering of your time to give them a needed break would let them know their service is recognized and appreciated.
